About Rands per Kilometre
Ryan Pillay is the pen name of this site's editorial team. We use one name and one consistent voice so the site reads like it comes from one place, but there's no single person called Ryan, and we won't pretend otherwise.
Our guides are researched from published sources: fuel price gazettes from the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, the Reserve Bank's interest rate decisions, provincial licence fee schedules, manufacturers' price lists and specifications, SARS tables and insurers' published terms, plus readers' real experiences when they share them with us. We link every source and give the date we checked it. When we use a scenario to show how something works, we say clearly that it's an example, not a real person.
What we cover
Car running costs, fuel prices, car insurance explained, licence discs and roadworthy tests, car finance and buying used cars in South Africa.
How we approach it
- Every number shown. We show the sum, the source and the assumptions so you can redo it with your own car, quote or statement.
- Cash cost and true cost. We count what leaves your bank account each month and the costs people forget, like tyres after the service plan ends.
- Explain, don't sell. We explain how insurance and finance work. We don't recommend any specific insurance policy or finance product, because that's financial advice and needs an FSCA licence.
How the site is paid for
The guides are free. We plan to show advertising, including ads served by Google, and in future some links may be affiliate or referral links that pay us a commission if you get a quote or buy something, at no cost to you. When a page has one, it says so. Advertisers and partners never decide what our guides say, and we don't rank or recommend insurers or lenders.
Corrections
Rules, prices and dates change, and we make mistakes. If you spot something wrong or out of date, please tell us and we'll fix it and note the change.
